Course Description

The i4Geo Geospatial Science & Technology Series is a dynamic, hands-on workshop series designed to provide participants with advanced skills and practical knowledge across a broad spectrum of geospatial analyses and applications. All modules can be taken in a ‘watch and learn’ style, however some also offer the option to bring your own laptop and follow along with exercises, provided necessary software and files are preloaded.

The GeoAI and Trajectory Mining workshop is part of the i4Geo Geospatial Science & Technology Series, designed to introduce participants to the cutting-edge integration of artificial intelligence and geospatial technologies. This workshop focuses on GeoAI applications in analyzing trajectory data to uncover movement patterns and support decision-making in fields like environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster response.

Course Outline

The following topics will be presented and discussed:

1. Introduction to GeoAI and Trajectories

  • Overview of GeoAI and its applications in spatial data analysis.
  • Importance of trajectory mining for urban planning, transportation, and environmental monitoring.
  • GIS tools for tracking and analyzing movement patterns.

2. Trajectory Data Analysis and Mining Techniques

  • Trajectory clustering methods to group similar movement patterns.
  • Origin-Destination (OD) distance matrices and their role in understanding movement during critical events.
  • Case Study: Wildfire Movement Patterns
    • Analysis of human movement during Canadian wildfires.
    • Traffic patterns and evacuation routes before and during the wildfire.
    • Key insights into disaster response and evacuation planning.

3. Hands-On Exercise: Trajectory Clustering and OD Matrices

  • Practical application of clustering techniques and OD matrices using Python (e.g., scikit-mobility) and GIS software (e.g., QGIS).
  • Visualization of clustered movement patterns on GIS maps.

Learner Outcomes

Through expert-led presentations, case studies, and hands-on exercises, participants will explore trajectory analysis techniques, including clustering and origin-destination matrices, and learn how to apply these methods to real-world challenges. This workshop is ideal for researchers, analysts, and professionals interested in harnessing GeoAI for dynamic spatial data analysis.
