Course Description

The i4Geo Geospatial Science & Technology Series is a dynamic, hands-on workshop series designed to provide participants with advanced skills and practical knowledge across a broad spectrum of geospatial analyses and applications. All modules can be taken in a ‘watch and learn’ style, however some also offer the option to bring your own laptop and follow along with exercises, provided necessary software and files are preloaded.

The R for Geospatial Analysis II workshop is a part of the i4Geo Geospatial Science & Technology Series, designed to dive deeper into analyzing, and quantifying 2D and 3D data, learning ways of automating processing steps, and producing meaningful research results within R. As in part one, this workshop will be a combination of presentations and examples, live demonstrations within R, and guided exercises.

Course Outline

The following topics will be presented and discussed:

  • From a 3D lidar point cloud to a 2D raster: DEMs DSMs, & CHMs
  • Aboveground biomass modeling (area-based approach): Lidar data plot extraction, lidar metric derivation, automation of processing steps
  • Change detection
  • Statistics in R & visualization of results: descriptive statistics, histograms, kernel density distribution functions, significance tests
  • Real-world examples of active research

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this final part, the course participant will be able to use R for working with 2D and 3D data and convert data from 3D to 2D, use lidar data in R for deriving aboveground biomass, automate processing routines in R for big data handling, use R for change detection analysis, perform statistical tests and analyze results effectively in R, writing R scripts for producing figures, which can be run repeatedly and quickly if results change.
