Course Description

The i4Geo Geospatial Science & Technology Series is a dynamic, hands-on workshop series designed to provide participants with advanced skills and practical knowledge across a broad spectrum of geospatial analyses and applications. All modules can be taken in a ‘watch and learn’ style, however some also offer the option to bring your own laptop and follow along with exercises, provided necessary software and files are preloaded.

In the first part of a two-part R workshop, course participants will be introduced to R, a programming language and software environment for statistical and geospatial analysis, graphics representation, and reporting. The workshop will consist of a combination of presentations and examples, live demonstrations within R, and guided exercises.

Course Outline

The following topics will be presented and discussed:

  • Using R for geospatial and statistical analysis
  • Overview of R libraries and how to use them
  • Data types in R and how to work with different types of data
  • Data visualization: the basics

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this first part, the course participant will be able to use R for basic geospatial analysis, download and work with R libraries, work with Excel spreadsheets or txt-files in R, work with 2D raster and vector data in R, work with 3D lidar point clouds in R, and make basic plots of various data.
